Scleral lenses are specialized contact lenses designed specifically for individuals with keratoconus, a condition where the cornea bulges irregularly.

Scleral lenses are custom-made to fit the individual's eye shape.  They are typically made from a rigid gas permeable material and have a large diameter that extends beyond the cornea.  When placed on the eye, the lenses create a fluid-fluid-filled space between them and the cornea, which provides support and prevents the cornea from bulging further.

Scleral lenses vault over the irregular cornea, providing a smooth surface for light to pass through, resulting in clearer and sharper vision.
